Vande Bharat Trains: What They Are and How to Book One

The semi-high-speed chair-car services that changed daytime rail travel — and how to travel on one.

What a Vande Bharat service is

Vande Bharat is Indian Railways' family of self-propelled (train-set) chair-car services. Instead of a locomotive pulling coaches, the whole train is a single distributed unit, which gives it faster acceleration and shorter turnaround at terminals. In practice that means fewer minutes lost at every start and stop, and journey times that beat a conventional Shatabdi on the same corridor by a real margin.

The services are daytime trains built around speed and punctuality, running between large cities roughly 200 to 800 km apart. There are now well over a hundred of them, and the list keeps growing as new rakes are commissioned, so if you last looked a year ago it is worth checking again.

Classes and what you get

Most Vande Bharat services run two classes: AC Chair Car, the standard option, and Executive Chair Car, with larger seats and more legroom. Both are fully air-conditioned, with reclining seats, charging points, and onboard catering served at your seat. There are no Sleeper or non-AC classes and no unreserved coaches.

Because the trains are chair-car only, they are a poor fit for overnight journeys and a very good fit for a same-day return trip. The passenger capacity per rake is high, which also means availability is often better than a Sleeper-heavy long-distance train on the same date.

How it compares with Shatabdi

Shatabdi services are the older premium daytime trains, locomotive-hauled, with a mix of CC and EC and frequently a stop pattern that serves intermediate cities. Vande Bharat runs tend to be faster end-to-end with fewer but not zero halts.

Which is better depends on where you board. If you travel between two mid-sized intermediate stations, a Shatabdi that stops there may suit you better than a Vande Bharat that flies past. Compare schedules and fares on the actual route using the train search tool rather than assuming the newer train is always the right one.

Finding and booking one

Search your route on IndTrain and filter by the Vande Bharat type tag, or look at the train list for the numbers flagged as Vande Bharat. Our train pages show the timetable, running days and estimated fares per class for each service, and the live status page tracks it on the day.

Book early for weekend and holiday travel — these trains are popular for exactly the trips they are designed for, and the good departure slots sell out first. Because they are all reserved, there is no general compartment to fall back on.

Frequently asked questions

Does Vande Bharat have sleeper coaches?

The chair-car Vande Bharat services run AC Chair Car and Executive Chair Car only, with no sleeper or unreserved classes. Separate sleeper variants are a newer development on selected routes.

Is Vande Bharat faster than Shatabdi?

On the same corridor, Vande Bharat generally completes the journey faster because its train-set design accelerates and turns around more quickly, even though both have similar top speeds.
