Rajdhani: long-distance AC night trains
Rajdhani services connect the capital region with major cities over long distances, mostly overnight, and are fully air-conditioned with Sleeper-class berths replaced by 1A, 2A and 3A. They have few halts relative to distance, prioritised paths, and onboard catering included in the fare. If you want the fastest comfortable option on a long overnight trunk route, a Rajdhani is usually it.
Shatabdi: the daytime speedsters
Shatabdi trains are the daytime counterparts: air-conditioned chair-car services that leave in the morning and return the same evening, designed so a business traveller can do a round trip in a day. They typically stop at only a handful of stations and include meals. They are daytime-only, so they are the wrong choice for a night crossing.
Duronto: non-stop between the ends
Duronto services were conceived as point-to-point expresses with few or no commercial halts in between — the train runs from its origin to its destination with technical stoppages only. They are air-conditioned, long-distance and fast. The trade-off is obvious: a Duronto is excellent if you are travelling end to end, and useless if you need to get off midway.
Some Duronto services have since had commercial halts added, so check the actual timetable on the train page rather than assuming a given train is still non-stop.
Garib Rath, Humsafar, Jan Shatabdi and friends
Garib Rath is the budget air-conditioned service: three-tier AC only, dense accommodation, no included meals, and fares far below a Rajdhani. Humsafar is a similar idea with 3A and Sleeper in air-conditioned rakes, aimed at long overnight routes. Jan Shatabdi offers a cheaper daytime option with both AC chair car and second sitting.
The pattern is straightforward. Premium brands buy you speed, fewer halts and often meals; the budget brands buy you air-conditioning at a lower fare with more stops and denser coaches. Match the brand to the journey length and the time of day, then confirm the actual fare and schedule on the specific train rather than the brand name alone.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better, Rajdhani or Duronto?
For an end-to-end overnight journey a Duronto can be faster because it has few intermediate halts. If you board or alight midway, a Rajdhani or a regular superfast is the practical choice.
Do Garib Rath trains include food?
No. Garib Rath is a budget air-conditioned service with 3A accommodation and no complimentary catering included in the fare.
