How the GPS train speed tracker works
Your phone is already carrying a precision instrument: a GNSS receiver that talks to 20 or more satellites at once and fixes your position to within a few metres. The IndTrain speed tracker taps that receiver directly through your browser and turns position changes into a speed reading, exactly like the speedometer apps used by drivers — but tuned for railway speeds and stops.
Every time the GPS produces a new fix, the tracker measures how far you moved and how quickly, cross-checks it with the receiver's own reported speed, smooths the last few readings so the needle does not jump, and shows the result on the dial. It also keeps a running trip log: your top speed so far, the moving average, the distance covered in kilometres and the elapsed time. The speed graph at the bottom plots the last 90 readings so you can see every acceleration, every slow-down and every halt of your journey.
What the four trip numbers mean
Top speed
The fastest smoothed reading of your trip. On most expresses this lands between 100 and 130 km/h on open sections, and 155–160 km/h on the Delhi–Bhopal Vande Bharat corridor.
Moving average
The average of every reading above 1 km/h. It ignores the time spent standing at stations, so it reflects how fast the train actually runs when moving.
Distance covered
Summed from every trustworthy GPS segment since you pressed start. It is a good cross-check against the railway's own mileage: the difference from the official route distance is usually under 2%.
Duration
Time since you started tracking. Divide distance by duration and you get the overall trip average including halts — the number the railway's performance reports quote.
Tips for an accurate reading inside a train
- Sit by the window. Coach roofs and metal pillars block satellite signals; a window seat typically gives a 3–10 m accuracy fix, while a middle berth can drift to 30 m or more.
- Keep the browser open. The tracker updates continuously; if the phone aggressively sleeps the tab, keep the screen on or reopen the page.
- Allow location once, use it all journey. Granting “while using the app” permission is enough — your position never leaves your phone, nothing is stored or sent to any server.
- Works without network. GPS reception does not need mobile data, so the speed keeps updating in the dead zones between towers where live-status apps stop working.
- Tunnels and ghat sections. Expect the needle to freeze or wander briefly when satellites drop; it recovers automatically once you are out.
