How to Find the Platform Number for Your Train

Platform numbers are decided late and change often — here is how to keep up with them.

Why platform numbers are announced late

A platform number is not a property of the train — it is a property of a particular arrival on a particular day at a particular station. The station controller assigns platforms as trains approach, balancing punctuality, length of the rake, connecting trains and the need to keep other lines clear. That is why the same train uses a different platform on different days.

For terminating and originating stations the platform is usually fixed well in advance, but in the middle of a route you may see the number confirmed only fifteen minutes before arrival. Trains running late get reassigned most often, because a delayed train no longer lines up with its original slot on the station's plan.

Where to look

The most reliable source is the station itself: the electronic display boards on the platform concourse, the enquiry counters and the announcements. NTES — and the third-party services built on its data — also publish the platform number for a train once the station has assigned it, which means the same page that shows the delay often shows the platform too.

On IndTrain, the live status page shows the current and next station for your train along with the delay; where the railway reports a platform for the next halt, it appears there. If the platform is blank, it simply has not been assigned yet — check again closer to the time.

A simple routine before boarding

Check the platform from the live status about an hour before arrival, then confirm it against the station board when you reach the concourse, then again from the on-platform display. Three checks sound excessive, until the one time the platform changes ten minutes before arrival and half the train's passengers are on the wrong side of the footbridge.

If you are changing trains, leave a comfortable buffer. A cross-platform transfer is easy; a transfer between distant platforms at a large junction can take twenty minutes with luggage, and the arriving train's platform is decided at the same late stage as everyone else's.

Frequently asked questions

When is a train's platform number announced?

At originating stations it may be known hours in advance, but at intermediate stations it is often assigned only 15 to 30 minutes before arrival.

Can the platform number change after it is announced?

Yes, and it frequently does when a train is running late or when another train's movement takes priority. Always confirm from the platform display before boarding.
