Coach Position and Engine Position: How to Board Fast
Stop sprinting down the platform — find where your coach will stop before the train rolls in.

What coach position means
Coach position is the order in which the coaches of a train are arranged, counted from the engine. If your ticket says B4, coach position tells you whether B4 will be the fourth or the sixteenth vehicle to roll past you — which is the difference between a relaxed walk and a sprint down the platform with luggage.
Indian Railways publishes coach composition for most trains, and stations display it on a screen or a printed board near the platform, often as a row of coloured boxes with the engine marked at one end. Because trains can be marshalled differently on different days, the displayed order is what counts, not a fixed number you memorised last month.
How to use it
Find your coach number on the ticket, look at the coach-position display at the station, and note whether your coach is at the front or the back of the formation. Then look at which direction the train will arrive from — the platform display or an announcement normally tells you — and stand roughly where your coach will halt, not where the entrance ramp is.
If the train is running late and you are boarding quickly, knowing whether your coach is near the engine is the single most useful thing on the platform. It is also worth noting that the guard's coach is almost always at the rear, which is useful if you need the guard.
Finding it before you reach the station
You do not have to wait for the platform display. The IRCTC booking flow and NTES both expose coach composition for a train, and many trains have it listed for the current rake. On this site, the train page for your train shows the route and the classes in the formation, and the live status page confirms the train's direction of travel on the day.
Two cautions. First, coach position can change if the railway attaches or detaches coaches, so re-check at the station rather than relying on a screenshot from three days ago. Second, a few trains run with a reversed formation, which flips the order — the station display is always the ground truth.
Frequently asked questions
What is engine position and how is it different from coach position?
Coach position is the order of the whole formation counted from the engine, while engine position simply tells you which end of the rake the locomotive is at, so you know which way the train will be arranged.
Can coach position change on the day of travel?
Yes. Attaching or removing coaches, or running a different rake, changes the order. Always confirm against the display at your station rather than a saved screenshot.
