The two windows you must remember
Tatkal booking opens exactly one day before the train's scheduled departure from its originating station, not from your boarding station. Two separate windows open on that day: air-conditioned classes (1A, 2A, 3A, CC, EC) open at 10:00 AM, and non-air-conditioned classes (mainly Sleeper) open at 11:00 AM. Both are in Indian Standard Time.
The one-hour gap exists so the two rush periods do not collide. Because the window is tied to the origin station's departure day, a train leaving at 23:50 tonight has its Tatkal window open this morning — plan backwards from the origin, not from your own station.
What Tatkal costs
Tatkal berths carry a premium over the normal fare, priced per class and scaled to the distance travelled: a minimum charge that applies to short trips and a higher rate for long journeys. There is also a non-refundable Tatkal charge that is added whether or not you travel, and it is not returned on cancellation.
Because the premium is not huge for Sleeper and much larger for air-conditioned classes, Tatkal is often best value in Sleeper and worst in First AC. If you only need to travel a short distance, compare the Tatkal fare against a normal ticket on a less crowded train before booking on impulse.
Why it sells out in seconds
Tatkal quota is small — a fraction of the coach — and the highest-demand trains are booked out within a minute of the window opening. Two things decide whether you get a berth: your typing speed and your saved details. Log in before the window opens, have passenger details saved in the IRCTC master list, and have your payment method ready rather than reaching for a wallet at 10:00:10.
Book directly on IRCTC or its official app. Agents and third-party sites add their own charges and do not get faster access to the same quota, so there is little to gain and plenty to lose. Our train search is useful to see which trains run your route so you can switch to an alternative instead of fighting for one overflowing Tatkal quota.
Rules that catch people out
Tatkal bookings are not transferable, and identity proof of the booked passenger is checked on board — carry the same ID you booked with. Tatkal is for the full journey of the train in most cases; boarding at an intermediate station is generally not allowed on a Tatkal ticket.
There is a limit on the number of passengers per Tatkal PNR, and a short-notice cancellation ruleset applies, so cancelling a Tatkal berth returns less than you would expect. Finally, remember that a Tatkal ticket is still subject to the same chart and boarding rules as any other ticket.
Getting a seat without Tatkal
If Tatkal is gone, do not stop. Premature booking in the general quota weeks ahead is nearly always cheaper, and cancel-free if your plans are firm. Check the waitlist movement on the route you want using the live status page on the day of travel, or look for a different class — an empty 3A is often less crowded than a full Sleeper.
Frequently asked questions
What time does Tatkal open?
AC classes open at 10:00 AM and non-AC classes at 11:00 AM, one day before the train departs from its originating station.
Is Tatkal bookable at intermediate stations?
Usually not. Tatkal is intended for the full journey from the train's origin, and boarding at an intermediate station on a Tatkal ticket is generally not permitted.
Is the Tatkal charge refundable on cancellation?
No. The Tatkal premium is non-refundable and is kept even if you cancel. Only the base fare portion is considered for refund as per the normal cancellation rules.
